The Daily News on Sept. 7, 1922, reported on the Poultrymen of the College of Agriculture, which performed culling demonstrations on various Kentucky chicken flocks to report the effects of removing hens showing signs of low production.
Examples included pulling 80 from 180 Brown Leghorns from the flock of W.W. Hampton and 15 of Mrs. Lee Kendall’s 48 Barred Plymouth Rocks. During the week following the removal of the “loafer” chickens, Mr. Hampton received 10 eggs as he had previously, while Mrs. Kendall feasted on 24 instead of her previous 32.
