- Warren East senior Deca Burr (12) kicks past South Warren players during an Aug. 24 game at South Warren.
The South Warren girls’ soccer team rolled right along, cruising past Warren East 9-1 on Saturday at South Warren High School.
Cora Kincaid and Addison Boor provided the bulk of the offense, as South Warren (3-2) started fast and never looked back against previously unbeaten Warren East.
“It was a good effort by the girls,” South Warren coach David Cross said. “Obviously we still have a lot of things to work on going deeper into the season. I was proud of our effort.”
Kincaid entered the day with one goal in the first four games, but only needed 15 minutes to double that – helping the Spartans take a 2-0 lead in a four-minute span early in the first half. Boor provided the next two goals in the half, scoring in the 33rd minute and adding a second goal off a rebound shot by Kincaid in the 37th minute.
The Spartans dominated the first half with a 12-0 advantage in shots on goal.
“Warming up, we were kind of sluggish,” Kincaid said. “I feel like we weren’t really expecting to come out here and jump out right off the bat. I feel like (we) all kind of locked in at the last second and were like, ‘Let’s get this game going,’ and we kind of went from there.”
South Warren kept it going in the second half.
Boor picked up her third goal of the day in the 49th minute, scoring off a cross from Kincaid.
Warren East (4-1) finally got its first shot on goal in the 50th minute, scoring less than a minute later when Dayeli Mendez was able to finish a corner kick in the box.
South Warren quickly responded, with Elda Mustafic scoring off a pass from Kincaid in the 54th minute. Kincaid added her third goal of the day in the 69th, scoring on a rebound after her penalty kick was stopped.
Nine minutes later Kincaid added her fourth goal, then assisted Boor’s fourth goal of the day to finish it off.
“I feel like this brought us confidence in scoring and pulled us closer together as a team,” Kincaid said.
South Warren finished with 24 shots on goal, while Warren East had five shots on goal.
“I don’t think our intensity was good at all in the first half,” Warren East coach Will Eller said. “We were chasing a lot. Stepping late, causing the rest of our teammates behind us to rotate. That opened up more dangerous space. I think in the second half we put on a little better showing when it came to that. We realized we had to pick our levels up and went from there. We just couldn’t get after it today.”
South Warren was able to contain Warren East’s leading scorer Deca Burr, who entered the day with 11 goals in four games.
“Our goal was to keep the ball away from her,” Cross said. “We didn’t man-mark her, but we just wanted to keep the ball away from her. We tried to possess the ball away from her. They did a pretty good job of that. We had a couple of breakdowns. Deca was able to break through a couple of times and gave us a scare, but all in all the girls did a good job.”
South Warren will host Madisonville-North Hopkins at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Warren East hosts District 15 rival Allen County-Scottsville at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday
