In the summer of 1963, the National Science Foundation Summer Institute at Western State College hosted a series of lectures from scientists, both local faculty and visiting professionals.

One guest lecturer was Dr. Tjeard De Boar, a Dutch physicist since 1937 and lecturer, senior officer and supervisor at the University of Groningen. The Daily News reported on July 2 that Dr. De Boar had arrived on campus that day and would be taking a few days to recover and sightsee before delivering his lectures.
