History made with nomination of Marshall

History was made in Washington with President Johnson’s nomination of Solicitor General Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court.

Marshall, 58, was the first person of color chosen to serve on the Supreme Court and would succeed Tom C. Clark following Clark’s resignation. The Daily News on June 13, 1967, quoted Johnson’s assertion that Marshall “…has already earned his place in history,” further citing Marshall’s numerous arguments before the Supreme Court, the majority of which he won.
