There truly is no one like George Miller.
The Australian filmmaker has one of the most eclectic resumes of all time — with everything from the “Mad Max” films and “The Witches of Eastwick” to family fare like both of the “Babe” and “Happy Feet” films.

Miller is back again with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” — his fifth film in the franchise. This prequel to the high mark of the series “Fury Road” is another towering achievement. While “Furiosa” doesn’t quite have the same dramatic depth of its predecessor, it is still a high-octane action film, thanks in part to Miller’s stellar direction. Miller proves yet again that he is one of the true visionaries of cinema, a master at creating action sequences that just pop off the screen.
“Furiosa” traces the backstory of Furiosa Jabassa, played exceptionally by Charlize Theron in “Fury Road.” The film begins with Furiosa (played first by Alya Browne before Anya Taylor-Joy takes the role later in the film) kidnapped by a biker gang led by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).
Furiosa is hell-bent on revenge after Dementus kills her mother but is enslaved by the warlord until he eventually trades her to the leaders of another settlement known as the Citadel.
Furiosa slowly hatches her plan to escape with two goals in mind — killing Dementus and returning to her homeland.
The story is more about getting from action sequence to action sequence but serves its purpose enough to provide the characters with enough development and motivation to raise the stakes in those sequences.
The film is full of breathtaking stunts and action — the highlights including an ambush on a mining facility known as the Bullet Farm and a chase where Dementus and his gang attempt to hijack a supply truck. These sequences are Miller at his very best — crafting some stunning moments that are immersed in this beautifully realized post apocalyptic world. It’s craftsmanship that needs to be seen on the biggest screen possible (absolutely mesmerizing in IMAX).

Joy proves more than capable of following in Theron’s rather large shadow, while Hemsworth has a lot of fun practically chewing up the scenery as the film’s main heavy.
“Furiosa” doesn’t quite have the same stand-alone effectiveness as “Fury Road,” with the film playing more to fans of the franchise than the previous installment. Still, it’s the kind of chapter that provides the desired high-powered action and immaculate stuntwork, all crafted by one of the best filmmakers working today.
