Morgan collects three hits in Hot Rods’ 9-4 loss to Cyclones

Tre’ Morgan recorded a three-hit game with two doubles, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods dropped the penultimate game of the series, 9-4 to the Brooklyn Cyclones on Saturday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Brooklyn (19-19) scored first, getting to Hot Rods starter Yoniel Curet in the top of the first inning. Nick Morabito was hit by a pitch and stole second, Nick Lorusso walked and Junior Tilien singled in the first run of the game. William Lugo followed with another RBI single, placing Brooklyn ahead 2-0.
The Hot Rods (21-17) answered in the bottom of the second against Cyclones starter Felipe De La Cruz. Hunter Haas led off the inning with a single and swiped second. Elis Barreat and Luis Ariza walked to load the bases. Chandler Simpson singled to center scoring Haas from third, to cut the Cyclone lead in half, 2-1.
The Cyclones drove in another run in the fourth against Hot Rods reliever Sandy Gaston. Omar de Los Santos walked, then stole second and third. Nick Lorusso walked and Tilien hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring De Los Santos to increase the Brooklyn lead to 3-1.
Brooklyn scored again in the top of the fifth inning with Gaston still on the hill. The four-run inning for the Cyclones was highlighted by a two-out double by Lorusso that scored two and gave Brooklyn a 7-1 lead.
Brooklyn continued its high-powered offense in the top of the sixth against reliever Aneudy Cortorreal. William Lugo and Stanley Consuegra hit back-to-back homers to lead off the inning, extending the Brooklyn lead to 9-1.
Bowling Green scored in the sixth off Cyclones right-handed pitcher Jeffrey Colon. Jhon Diaz walked to lead off the inning, Ryan Spikes doubled and advanced to second on the throw to third. Barreat reached on a throwing error to first by Wilfredo Lara scoring one and cut the lead to 9-2.
The Hot Rods stayed hot in the seventh again off Colon. Morgan singled, Haas singled and Spikes singled in Morgan to make it 9-3.
Bowling Green continued the rally in the eighth inning off new Brooklyn reliever Josh Hejka. Xavier Isaac walked, Morgan doubled and Colton Ledbetter singled, scoring Isaac and making it a 9-4 contest. The scoring would stop there, ending in a 9-4 Brooklyn victory.
Felipe De La Cruz (2-4) went five innings, giving up four hits and one run while striking out four. Curet (1-5) tossed three innings, surrendering two runs on two hits, and dished out six walks with two strikeouts.
The Hot Rods and Cyclones will play the finale of a six-game series on Sunday at Bowling Green Ballpark with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. Right-hander Jonny Cuevas (3-0, 2.76) is set to take the mound with Brooklyn’s pitcher still to be determined.
