Bowling Green dropping the ball

In the world of Kentucky sports, a team of young rising stars has been overlooked. Vette City Junior Roller Derby (VCJRD) is a formidable group of young athletes traveling hundreds of miles to bring home wins and represent our city with integrity, skill and intensity.
A campaign to find a local location to showcase this female driven sport led to business and media sponsors, but no facility. This inaugural event was set to bring in large numbers of spectators while giving our kids the hometown experience they deserve. Our practice space has been invaluable to us, but unfortunately isn’t set up for spectators.

We took meetings with local Parks & Rec, school districts, local officials, politicians, business owner, nonprofits, etc., and still nobody would host this team.
The concern? Our wheels would damage their floors. We were willing to provide evidence to the contrary, perform skate demos and in some cases provide manufacturer statements that the flooring was “ideal for rolling sports.” Some wheels could damage gym floors, but Roller Derby uses polyurethane wheels that allow the skater to select wheels personalized to each floor. Despite our efforts, we went unheard and rarely granted opportunity to speak with decision makers directly.
Now Owensboro has heard about this opportunity to step in and have something few Kentucky cities do, a roller derby event to bring in tourism and showcase an inclusive, female driven, full contact sport for all ages. As we pivot to Owensboro, I can’t help but think it’s worth one last plea. I’ve called Bowling Green home for almost 20 years, I love this city.
I know we can be forward thinking, savvy enough and kind enough to make a home for these kids. Who will step up to the jam line and make this right? Bring VCJRD home.
