Tucked away on Page 5 of the Daily News’ April 10, 1949, edition was an announcement that the local mail service would soon be expanded.
Beginning two days from then, four additional routes would be added, extending the postal service to 3,000 residents of the suburbs. One mounted courier would serve some of the suburbs, while three new couriers on foot would be added to the existing 12 city routes.
Rural mailboxes were placed in a number of locations to make pickup easier for the mounted courier.
