A Bowling Green man accused of fatally shooting his roommate had a trial date set in his case.

Mickeal McCathren, 38, is charged with murder, possession of a defaced firearm and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon in connection with the death of Adrian J. Starks, 37, of Bowling Green.

Starks was shot on Nov. 6, 2022, at the apartment that he and McCathren shared on Spring Hollow Avenue.

McCathren’s attorney, Neal Tucker, requested a date for a jury trial Monday during a hearing before retired Judge Steve Wilson, sitting in for Warren Circuit Judge J.B. Hines.

Wilson set McCathren’s trial for Sept. 11 and scheduled a pretrial conference for June 17.

Starks’ death was investigated by the Bowling Green Police Department.

City police were called on the morning of Nov. 6, 2022, regarding a reported shooting in the 3200 block of Spring Hollow Avenue.

Starks had reportedly gone to a neighbor’s apartment and let someone there know that he had been shot.

Police were able to speak with Starks, who died during surgery at TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.

“Starks told law enforcement he was lying in bed when he was shot,” BGPD Detective Ryan Dillon said while testifying during a 2022 preliminary hearing in Warren District Court.

Starks mentioned a roommate to police, but Dillon testified that he did not identify McCathren as the shooter.

McCathren was found hiding under a mattress by city police as they swept the apartment in the aftermath of the incident.

After detaining McCathren and obtaining a search warrant, city police found a handgun in the bedroom that Dillon said was within arm’s reach of where McCathren was found hiding.

“McCathren told me he blacked out and didn’t remember what happened,” Dillon said in 2022.

City police spoke with neighbors who heard gunshots and saw Starks leave his apartment to go to the one next door, and no other people were known to have entered or exited the apartment during the time frame surrounding the shooting, Dillon said.

During the investigation, police learned that Starks had recently been in an argument with McCathren and made contact with McCathren’s family about a week before the shooting.

“(Starks) placed a call to McCathren’s family and stated that he was concerned that McCathren was using drugs a lot,” Dillon said.

McCathren remains in Warren County Regional Jail under a $500,000 cash bond.

In another indictment unrelated to the shooting, McCathren faces charges of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication, all stemming from a July 2022 arrest at Taco Bell, 1162 U.S. 31-W Bypass.
