We are forgetting history

We are forgetting history
I grew up in the 50s where we learned that hiding under our school desk would help us survive a Russian nuclear attack. When I joined the Navy, I learned that the best way to survive a nuclear attack was to sink the Russian submarine first. I served mostly in antisubmarine warfare, keeping tabs on the six to eight Russian subs off the East Coast.
I am distressed at most of my neighbors’ attitudes about Russia. They either have forgotten history, or they don’t care how Truman, Eisenhower and Marshall were preparing for World War III by convincing nine other countries and forming NATO. They understood Stalin was intent on ruling eastern Europe. We were going to fight a war with Russia and we needed allies to help. This meant that many Americans probably were going to die. That was the reality of dealing with Russia.
Russia has shown its intentions to take over Eastern Europe when Putin invaded Ukraine.
Americans have been lulled into a place where we think we can live our lives the way we want, and let the problems go somewhere we can’t hear the screaming.
Ukraine is expending the lives of their citizens when defending itself from Putin. They are watching the daily assault of drones and missiles on the civilians, churches and schools. Russia is bombing their electrical systems, apartments and dams. If left unchecked, this is the start of World War III. If that point is reached, our children and grandchildren will pay the price.
I did the right thing and contacted Rep. James Comer – four times. I requested that he say yes to aid to Ukraine. He has not answered my comments or returned my calls. My fear is he is waiting until 2025 when the attention will turn to the southern border and Russia can continue on through Ukraine and on to Latvia and the Baltic states.
When NATO has had enough, it will be a world war, and the southern border will no longer matter.
