In the Feb. 1, 2001, Daily News, it was reported that Western Kentucky University associate professor of geography and geology Chris Groves was collecting dye-trace samples in Mammoth Cave for a cave water movement project when the ledge he stood on gave way.
He fell 30 feet into a pit of water 2.5 feet deep. A 15-hour rescue later, Groves was finally pushed, pulled and carried from the cave and taken to the hospital with rib and shoulder fractures.
