- Pelican’s SnoBalls shaved-ice treats, already served in Bowling Green at stores on Scottsville Road and Nashville Road, will soon be available at a location on Louisville Road near Bristow Elementary School.
Pelican’s SnoBalls, already serving its flavored shaved ice at locations on Scottsville Road and Nashville Road in southern Warren County, may soon set up shop in the northern end of the county.
Salem Lockhart and his fiancee Jill Moore, through their Sunburst Dreams LLC, were approved Jan. 4 by the City-County Planning Commission of Warren County for a rezoning expected to allow them to move forward with plans to renovate a house at 6463 Louisville Road and transform it into the third Pelican’s location in Bowling Green.
The couple last October purchased the 1,400-square-foot structure that sits on a 0.74-acre lot just north of Bristow Elementary School. Now they’re planning to turn it into their second Pelican’s store, joining one they opened last year in Franklin.
“This is a great location,” said Lockhart, general manager of the Carter Lumber store on Louisville Road. “It’s close to the Bristow and Warren East schools and to the factories north of town.
“We’ll run a mobile unit too, so we’ll be able to set up at schools and special events in that area and in surrounding counties.”
The rezoning from residential estate to general business must now await final approval from Warren Fiscal Court, but Lockhart and Moore are already looking forward to opening the store, possibly as soon as April.
“We thought this would be something fun to do,” said Moore, who works as an accountant. “We both have stressful jobs, so this gives us something less stressful. Everybody who comes in to the store is in a good mood.”
Like Lockhart, Moore believes the northern Warren County location will lead to success.
“I think it will be a great thing on that side of town,” she said. “We’ll be able to set up for events at the Corvette plant and in Fountain Square Park downtown because our store will be closest to those locations.”
The Louisville Road store will be the third and final Bowling Green franchise, Moore said. It opened up when franchisee Troy Perkins – owner of the Scottsville Road and Nashville Road stores – closed a location in the Oxford Center on Veterans Memorial Lane.
Now Lockhart and Moore are aiming to build on the popularity of the “New Orleans shaved ice” treats served by North Carolina-based Pelican’s, which has more than 200 locations across 19 states.
“It’s a great product,” Moore said. “It’s like snowy ice, and we serve more than 100 flavors.”
Moore said Pelican’s has branched out in its product offerings, and this new store will carry “Peli-shake” drinks as well as soft serve and hand-scooped ice cream.
With a spacious lot, Lockhart said the new Pelican’s will have outdoor seating and an area for cornhole and other games.
