On Jan. 3, 1962, Chief Brett Basham told the Daily News that city firefighters had received new equipment, including 20 new protective rubber coats and eight pairs of trousers for fighting fires. Thirty-seven new helmets were also ordered but had not yet arrived at the time of reporting.

The previous day, firefighters responded to two calls, one on Scottsville Road, where a fire broke out in the trash compactor body of a Sanitation Department truck, and another on Cabell Drive at Bob Phillips Garage where a heating unit had shorted out.
