Bats lift Hot Rods to series win over Rome

The Bowling Green Hot Rods offense came to life, cruising to a 10-2 win over Rome on Sunday at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Bowling Green (23-24) scored in double figures for the first time since May 9, pounding out 13 hits to earn the series win over the Braves.

The Hot Rods threatened early, stranding two runners in scoring position in the second and third before breaking through in the fourth.

The Hot Rods sent eight batters to the plate scoring four times, with Brock Jones and Carson Williams delivering RBI doubles in the rally.

Bowling Green kept adding runs to extend the lead. The Hot Rods got an RBI double by Kam Jones in the sixth, an unearned run in the seventh to make the score 6-0.

BG capped the scoring with a four-run eighth that included a solo homer from Bob Seymour and RBI doubles from Jeffry Parra and Dru Baker.

Rome (24-27) got two runs in the ninth to avoid the shutout.

Parra paced the offense with three hits, while James and Baker added two hits each.

Keyshawn Askew bounced back from a loss in the series opener to earn the win in relief and improve to 3-5 on the season. Askew tossed four shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits with three strikeouts.

HOME SWEET HOME

Something about Bowling Green Ballpark brings out the best in the Hot Rods. With Sunday’s win, Bowling Green improved to 16-7 at home. The Hot Rods are 3-0-1 in home series.

The Hot Rods have been the opposite on the road. Bowling Green is 7-17 in road games and has lost all four road series this season.

DOUBLE EJECTIONS

Rome shortstop Ignacio Alvarez, Jr. and center fielder Kevin Kilpatrick, Jr. were both ejected in the third inning after the umpire ruled Carson Williams safe on a stolen base attempt at second base.

UP NEXT

The Hot Rods continue the homestand with Winston-Salem coming to Bowling Green Ballpark for the start of a six-game series at 6:35 p.m.

Entering Sunday’s play, Winston-Salem leads the way in the South Atlantic League South Division – two games ahead of Greenville and five games ahead of the Hot Rods.

Neither team has announced a starter for Tuesday’s game.
