Pop singer Janis Joplin found dead

The Daily News of Oct. 5, 1970, reported that 27-year-old “pop” singer Janis Joplin had been found dead the night before in her Hollywood, Calif., hotel room.

The popular musician known for her “uninhibited, screaming, wailing style” had shot to fame after appearing at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Five of her singles reached the Billboard Hot 100, including her cover of Kris Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” which hit No. 1 in March of 1971, six months after her tragic death of a heroin overdose.
