Morgan Violi case made us lose our innocence

Wes Swietek’s front page story in the June 19 edition on the still unsolved abduction and murder of Morgan Violi more than 25 years ago (“Remember Her As A Person” ) brought back unspeakably sad memories not just for her wonderful family, I’m sure, who lives with it every day, but to a lesser but just as painful degree all who were involved.
Hardened professional law enforcement officers like Bill Waltrip during his more than 30-year career are still haunted by it.
FBI agents still jump at leads; anything that might lead to a suspect and bring some degree of closure a quarter century later.
Those of us who were in local media covering the story still remember where we were and how we learned the stomach-turning news.
Wes quoted the Daily News as saying the confirmation of Morgan’s body was “a punch to a community’s stomach, a wound that may heal but would leave people never feeling quite the same.”
It made us lose our innocence and forced us to grow up whether we wanted to or not.
