On May 14, 1915, the Daily News reported the College Street bridge (now referred to as the Riverwalk Bridge) would soon be opening for vehicle traffic.

Local lawyer W.B. Gaines, believing that the bridge would take longer to complete, pledged that he would eat every strawberry that crossed the bridge if it was completed in time for strawberry season. The bridge was already being used for pedestrian traffic and would be open for other traffic only days later. The builders of the bridge were expected to hold the gentleman to his word and invited the whole community to the “feast.”
