More than 500 people gathered at a rally May 6, 1970, at Western Kentucky University to hear students and faculty members speak out against the killing of four students at Ohio’s Kent State University, according to a front-page article in the Daily News.

Members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire May 4, 1970, during a peace rally opposing the Vietnam War, as well as protesting the National Guard presence on campus. Nine people were also injured in the attack, which marked the first time a student had been killed in an anti-war gathering in U.S. history.
