On April 19, 1937, Viscount and Lady Tarbat (nee Dorothy Downing) of Castle Leod (pronounced “loud”) visited Bowling Green to spend some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grant B. Downing.

They planned to stay indefinitely because Tarbat was under a $2,500 bond for an involuntary manslaughter charge in Valdosta, Ga., the result of an auto accident that fatally injured James Lupo of Colquitt County, Ga. The manslaughter charge was dropped, and the civil suit filed by the dead man’s family was eventually settled out of court.
