On April 15, 1925, the Daily News reported that four local children were afflicted with serious illness after ingesting a poisonous plant while playing outside.
The article refers to the plant as “Jallice root,” but it is likely that they ate a plant called chalice vine – a poisonous plant endemic to Kentucky.
The children were said to be in the “throes of convulsions” by the time their parents discovered them. A doctor was called and he was able to administer proper treatment. The children were reportedly expected to fully recover.
