On Feb. 23, 1956, the Daily News reported that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested in connection with the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycotts protesting segregation on city buses.

The boycott was in its 12th week of protest, beginning when Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a White person.

It was reported that an estimated 5,000 people met that night of the 23rd at the First Baptist Church and heard King say: “This is a conflict between justice and injustice.”
