Luke Spurrier went out a champion in his last high school race.
The South Warren senior won the 800-meter run at the KHSAA Class 3A State Track and Field Championships on Saturday, running the half-mile race in one minute and 52.25 seconds.
Spurrier’s championship was his first state title and topped his previous personal best by three seconds.
“I knew I wanted to come get a PR and I knew I wanted to chase that championship,” Spurrier said. “I knew I needed to stay tough, go out fast to get ahead. Thankfully, my coach did everything he could and trained me well so I had that strength to finish strong.”
Spurrier won the race by a three-second margin. He also anchored the South Warren 4×800-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish in Lexington. He’ll run collegiately at Duke.
