County once famed for strawberry production

The L&N Railroad built strawberry sheds and added lines of track to accommodate strawberry production in Warren County in the early 20th century.

Warren County once was considered the “Strawberry Capital of the World” and ranked as one of the top berry-producing counties in Kentucky.

The season was short: mid-May through early June. An Owensboro newspaper article from May 9, 1918, features a call for 1,000 strawberry pickers, offering pay of 10 cents per gallon.

The L&N Railroad built strawberry sheds and additional lines of track to handle the influx of the berries and pickers. The sheds were located between 10th and 11th streets.
