Spartans pull away late to beat Greenwood 5-1

South Warren scored three runs in the sixth inning and totaled 11 hits in a 5-1 victory over Greenwood on Monday.
The Spartans (22-6 overall, 9-1 District 14) can claim the No. 1 seed in the District 14 Tournament with one more win in the series that continues Tuesday at 5 p.m. at South Warren High School.
South Warren won its sixth-straight district contest with AJ Isable setting the pace with a two-run home run in the top of the second inning.
Four straight hits in the sixth inning allowed for Trent Rice to drive in two runs off a single.
Logan Smith earned the win in 5 2/3 innings. He scattered seven hits and struck out two.
Chandler Wilson went 3-for-3 for the Gators (14-9, 5-5). His double in the bottom of the fifth set up Dell Henk’s RBI sacrifice fly for Greenwood’s only run.
Warren East 6,
Cumberland County 0
Ryan Hawks threw a no-hitter as Warren East snapped a five-game losing streak to beat Cumberland County 6-0.
Hawks came one walk away from a perfect game to go with his 16 strikeouts. The University of Louisville commit tossed 75 percent of his pitches for strikes.
The Raiders (10-18, 4-8) scored four runs in the second inning off five hits, then added two more runs in the fifth.
Hawks, Tanner Burckhard and Austin Comer each had two hits for Warren East.
Softball
Warren East 6,
Franklin-Simpson 0
Katie Gardner pitched a shutout with 15 strikeouts to keep Warren East undefeated with a 6-0 win at Franklin-Simpson. Gardner allowed just three hits and one walk in the win that ties the school record for most wins in a regular season.
Warren East (24-0) will go for the record Wednesday at Greenwood.
Kya Elkin had a home run and Lucy Patterson earned three hits for the Lady Raiders.
Maggie McBrayer, Madison Davis and Gracie Arnemann each had a hit for Franklin-Simpson (15-10).
South Warren 6,
Allen County-Scottsville 3
South Warren held off a last-inning rally to beat Allen County-Scottsville 6-3. The Lady Patriots (1-19-1) scored two runs in the top of the seventh before the game ended on a double play.
Lexi Isable hit a three-run homer for the Spartans (16-10) in the first inning to set up the early 3-0 lead. South Warren stretched the lead to 5-0 before ACS got on the board in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded walk.
Each team had eight hits. Jessica Bush led the Spartans with three hits while Isable and Madison Stumbo each had two hits.
Bailey Ausbrooks led the Lady Patriots with three hits and drove in a pair of runs.
