A 20-0 run by the Trojanettes in the first quarter made for an evening stroll that put them in the Region 4 championship game for the first time since 2009.

Barren County (30-4) shot 50 percent from the field, totaled 21 assists and outrebounded Logan County by 30. The Trojanettes moved effectively with 20 points coming on the fast break and the bench added 25 points.

“I thought we did really well running in transition,” BCHS coach Piper Lindsey said. “That was one of our keys from the start. Run and finish, sprint and transition. We knew Logan County was a team that does the same thing and I thought our defense was excellent, which helped us obviously rebounding the basketball and getting out early and getting out quick.”

Pedigo finished the night with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. She did most of that damage in the first half while adding just two points, a rebound and an assist in the third quarter. The senior, along with most of Barren County’s starters, sat out the fourth quarter.

Elizabeth Bertram led the Trojanettes with 16 points while Eve Jackson came off the bench for 11 points and McKenzie England, one game removed from making every shot from the field, turned in 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and nine rebounds.

“I just try to do what my team needs me to do,” Pedigo said. “Rebound and pass the ball and score sometimes. I just do what they need me to do.”

Already the winningest season in Barren County history, Monday’s win put the Trojanettes at 30 victories on the year. Barren County’s previous record win total was 26 wins on three occasions, the latest being 2007.

“We wanted to be playing our best right now,” Lindsey said. “Their goal was to win more than 25 games and we got that in the regular season. That says a lot about the team and it’s not like we’ve played an easy schedule either.”

Blayke Bingham hit a triple on Logan County’s opening possession from the tip before it all went downhill for the Lady Cougars (22-11)

Barren County went on a 20-0 run led by 10 points from Bertram. Paige Vanzant’s jumper with 1:06 left in the first quarter snapped the run and the Lady Cougars trailed 20-5 after eight minutes.

“I didn’t even know that happened,” Pedigo said on the run. “We just wanted a good intensity coming out. We wanted to really jump on them early and I think we really executed that.”

The Trojanettes kept rolling with Bertram and Baily Pedigo reaching double figures by halftime with a 42-18 lead. Lindsey couldn’t have asked for a better pace from her team in the first half with 12 assists and 16 points scored on the fast break.

“We never got the momentum ever and they set that tone early,” LCHS senior guard Sarah Beth Hale said. “We just got down too far to ever come back. We fought hard and I don’t think we have anything to be sad about. They played a great game.”

Barren County ran out the clock from there. Raven Ennis scored on a layup to make it a 30-point game in the fourth quarter.

Vanzant led Logan County with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

“I thought they played really well in the beginning and it seemed like they didn’t miss a shot,” LCHS coach Finley Baird said. “Very disciplined team. They were determined and went after it and made a statement that they wanted it.

“Last two or three weeks they stepped their game up and played well together all around.”

Barren County will play Bowling Green in Tuesday night’s regional final at 6 p.m. at Diddle Arena. The Trojanettes won by six points in the previous meeting with the Lady Purples in January.

“It’s really exciting, especially with the seniors we have this year,” Bertram said. “Barren County hasn’t been this far in a long time and to be here is exciting and we’re ready for the championship game tomorrow.”
