It didn’t take long for Warren Central to feel right at home in the Region 4 Tournament semifinals.
The Dragons made quick work of Logan County in a 93-77 win that puts them back in a rematch for the Region 4 championship Saturday against Bowling Green.
Warren Central (19-11) looked comfortable all night while shooting 56 percent from the floor at E.A. Diddle Arena. Tayshawn Bibb was perfect on 7-for-7 shooting to lead the Dragons with 22 points.
Kobe Brents made three triples and had 19 points while Dre Boyd scored 13 points in the first quarter.
“We made a lot of shots that we missed the other night,” WCHS coach William Unseld said. “Made shots around the rim that rolled out on us the other night. When we shoot it well, we’re going to beat a whole lot of people. These guys have had a great two days of practice. They have their little groove right now.”
The Dragons led by double digits most of the night after needing overtime to defeat Glasgow in the first round of the tournament. Logan County (25-7) trimmed a 24-point deficit to 12 at one point in the fourth quarter, but never made a contending charge.
Beyond Bibb, Brents and Boyd scoring double figures, the Dragons bench added 28 points and the team enjoyed a 40-21 edge in rebounding.
“We know if we rebound the ball, teams are going to have a hard time playing with us,” Bibb said. “We knew if we rebounded, guarded and moved the ball on offense, we’d have a good chance at winning the game. That’s what we did.”
A roster with plenty of turnover from last year’s state semifinal team meshed progressively through the season and now sits in a familiar position with a chance to defend its Region 4 crown. Saturday’s 6 p.m. championship game will be the 18th straight season where the region champion will come from District 14.
Logan County’s season ends one game after defeating Metcalfe County 72-70 in overtime for its first region tournament win since 1998.
“This was supposed to be a year where it’s a chance for somebody to knock one of us off and here we are again,” Unseld said. “Some really talented teams around the region.”
Warren Central took the lead quickly by forcing Logan County into six turnovers in the first quarter.
Boyd had 13 points in the first quarter on 5 of 7 shooting – with two 3-pointers – to help the Dragons find early separation with a 26-17 lead. The Dragons stretched the lead to 19 points with back-to-back layups by Geovonni Floyd with 2:39 left.
Logan County answered with a 6-0 run to end the first half and trailed 43-29 at the break.
A technical foul on Anthony Woodard helped set up two free throws for Kobe Brents during a 10-2 run by the Dragons that pushed the gap to 20 points.
“We like to play in transition, it’s just our transition defense wasn’t getting back to stop their transition offense,” Logan County senior Kelby Epley said. “With them scoring, we couldn’t get into our offense. They got some easy shots that helped them get the big lead they got and we couldn’t overcome it.”
Epley led the Cougars with 22 points, Anthony Woodard added 16 and Dalton Thompson scored 13 points for the District 13 Tournament champions.
“Warren Central made some shots they don’t normally make and our defense was set up to make perimeter shots,” first-year Logan County coach John Tinsley said. “It was one of those nights where we rebounded like we haven’t all year and you have to give Central credit for that. I told them all year we’d go as far as the rebounding went and this was the end of the road. Heck of a year. I never dreamed we’d win 25 ballgames.”
