Lady Tops head for Texas for pair of tennis matches

Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team heads to the Lone Star State this weekend to compete in two away matches. The Lady Toppers will play at UT Arlington on Friday followed by a midday matchup at Conference USA opponent North Texas on Saturday.

UT Arlington (4-0) is undefeated this season, having played all four of its matches at home thus far. The Mavericks defeated C-USA member UTEP 6-1 on Feb. 1. This will be the first-ever competition between WKU and UT Arlington. The Mavericks’ Momoka Horiguchi is currently No. 113 on the ITA singles rankings.

North Texas (3-3, 1-0 C-USA) will be WKU’s first conference opponent of the season. The Mean Green is 3-0 on its home court this season. The Lady Toppers have only met North Texas one other time. The two squads played at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on April 26, 2003 where the Lady Toppers fell to the Mean Green 4-0 in the opening round.

In the most recent ITA Rankings, North Texas’ doubles pair Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze were named No. 19 in doubles. Kutubidze is also No. 69 on the singles rankings.

WKU (0-3) will play UT Arlington at 2 p.m. CT on Friday at the UTA Tennis Center. The Lady Toppers match against North Texas will begin at noon CT on Saturday. The C-USA matchup will take place in Plano, Texas, at the Lifetime Fitness Center.
