Community Options in Bowling Green will host its sixth annual “Cupid Chase” 5K race Saturday at the Lovers Lane Soccer Complex.

Community Options serves as advocates for adults and children with intellectual disabilities and autism seeking independence, according to Tabitha Tittle, coordinator of program services.

Race proceeds will help fund the nonprofit’s housing and employment services.

Community Options provides residential housing where individuals receive help around the clock with tasks like cooking, cleaning and other day-to-day tasks that disabled individuals find challenging.

“The whole point is just to give a little more assistance to these individuals,” Tittle said.

Through employment programs, the nonprofit also helps individuals become “as independent as they can” be in their quest for jobs and social interaction, Tittle said.

Community Options operates in 11 states. Kentucky has three sites, in Bowling Green, Alexandria and Paducah.

In 2016, the organization’s national expenditures totaled $133 million, of which about $100 million was used for residential services.

Meanwhile, nearly $6 million of Community Options’ $135 million in total revenue was obtained through fundraising. Tittle hopes for greater fundraising contributions.

“There’s not a lot of focus that goes toward individuals with disabilities,” Tittle said. “We’re definitely trying to expand that in the community. They’re just like everyday people trying to live their everyday lives. They just need more assistance.”

Last year, about 115 racers ran in the “Cupid Chase.” This year, Community Options wants to have at least 100 people. By Tuesday afternoon, nearly 60 people had signed up.

Racers can register online at comop.org before 10 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, pre-registered racers or individuals wanting to register can pick up their bibs, T-shirts and goodie bags from 4 to 7 p.m. at Community Options, 1300 Andrea St., Suite 201.

On Saturday, registration begins at 8 a.m., and the race kicks off at 9 a.m.
