Western Kentucky center Charles Bassey continued his tear through league play last week, earning his sixth Conference USA Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week award Monday.

It’s the second straight weekly freshman honor for the 6-foot-11, 245-pound native of Lagos, Nigeria.

Bassey averaged a dominant 19.5 points and 15 rebounds across two victories over Texas-San Antonio and Texas-El Paso last week.

The big man also shot 68.2 percent from the field, netted 9 of 14 free throws and finished the week with a C-USA-best 11 double-doubles this season – including five in his last six games.

Bassey’s 11 double-doubles are the most on record for a Hilltopper freshman, and he’s one of just two freshmen in the country averaging a double-double.

He tallied 22 points and a career-high 18 rebounds in Thursday’s overtime win over UTSA, while shooting 7 of 8 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line.

His 18 rebounds against the Roadrunners are the most by a Hilltopper freshman since freshmen became eligible to play again in 1972.

Bassey followed that up with another double-double in a comfortable win over UTEP, putting together 17 points and 12 boards. He averaged 36 minutes per game over the week.
