Lady Scotties clinch top seed in district

SCOTTSVILLE – Glasgow’s Dynasti Page found her shot and the Lady Scotties secured the top seed in the District 15 Tournament with a 41-39 win over host Allen County-Scottsville on Monday.
Page scored 15 points on five 3-pointers – including the game-winner with 37 seconds left – to give Glasgow the season sweep over the Lady Patriots and finish the regular season as the No. 1 seed in District 15.
“She’s been sick,” Glasgow coach Justin Stinson said. “I told her she wasn’t going to start and she said, ‘I get it coach,’ but I said that we were going to play her if she felt like she could play and she said, ‘Yeah.’
“Thank goodness we had her tonight.”
Glasgow (16-7 overall, 5-1 District 15) cruised to a 61-35 victory in Glasgow last month but needed Page’s last-minute heroics to secure Monday’s win.
After three lead changes and three ties, Glasgow started to get some separation midway through the second quarter.
A 3 from Page and three buckets in the paint by Ashanti Gore sparked a 9-2 spurt that allowed the Lady Scotties to build a 23-14 halftime lead. Page and Gore combined for 17 points in the half, with ACS going 6-for-21 from the field.
The Allen County offense came to life to start the third, using a 12-2 run to surge ahead 26-25.
The lead volleyed back and forth five times before Page’s 3 gave Glasgow a 36-32 advantage.
After both teams exchanged baskets, the Lady Patriots scored five straight and took a 39-38 lead on a spin move in the paint by Sarah Sutton with 1:45 left.
Allen County-Scottsville (17-6, 3-3) missed chances to extend the lead with misses at the free-throw line on back-to-back 1-and-1s, setting the stage for Page’s go-ahead 3 in transition.
“(When I hit it I thought) I just won the game,” Page said. “I stepped up and we are going to be in first.
“I’m really excited to be hitting my 3s because lately I haven’t been doing much at all. I’m glad I stepped up, showed them that I can be a really good player.”
The Lady Patriots had chances for the win or tie – with Mason Towery and Taylor Carter missing 3s and Sutton unable to connect on a shot in the paint.
Glasgow’s Kayla Bradley missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with two seconds left to give Allen County one more chance, but Towery’s 30-footer hit off the top of the backboard as time expired.
“We just couldn’t get it done,” Allen County coach Greg Dunn said. “We had our chances. You can look at a number of things – there were things throughout the game – and that’s how it usually goes in a tight game.”
Gore added 12 points for the Lady Scotties. As the one seed, Glasgow will open against host Monroe County in the opening round of the District 15 Tournament in two weeks.
Carter led the Lady Patriots with 11 points. Towery was held to nine points, while leading scorer Sutton was held to six points.
“Our kids bought in and we have some good defenders,” Stinson said. “Our recipe all year has been to defend and rebound. That is what we are good at and we are going to stick to it.”
The loss means Allen County-Scottsville will face Barren County in the District 15 Tournament in two weeks.
“Now we know,” Dunn said. “It’s so balanced … there is not an easy one. Barren County has a really, really good team and we split with them. It ought to be an exciting district tournament.”
Both teams’ next game will be against Metcalfe County. Glasgow will host the Lady Hornets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while ACS plays at Metcalfe County at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Nik Sorrell had 22 points and Robert Kingery added 20 points and 13 rebounds as the Scotties earned a share of the District 15 regular-season title.
“We come in here and play so great and now we have a chance to pull a bottle that I guess we hope the number one is going to be in there,” Glasgow coach James Willett said. “It’s going to be a tough matchup in the district tournament no matter who it is – either our crosstown rival (Barren County) or the host school (Monroe County).
“It’s still tough, but I am happy we are playing well at the right time.”
Playing without second leading scorer Tucker Kirkpatrick, out with an illness, Glasgow (16-9 overall, 4-2 District 15) took the lead for good late in the first quarter and continued to steadily pull away.
The Scotties led 29-21 at halftime, then exploded for 41 points in the second half – with the lead growing to as much as 22 points in the second half.
“It was a big win,” Kingery said. “They beat us earlier in the season, so we wanted to come out here and show them that we wanted the No. 1 spot as much as they do.”
Tayshaun Bradley added 14 points for Glasgow, which shot 51.9 percent from the field.
Jax Cooper had a career high 20 points for Allen County-Scottsville (18-6, 4-2), while Brett Rippy added 11 points.
“We played catch up all night long,” ACS coach Brad Bonds said. “Glasgow played a heck of a ballgame without one of its best players. It was like they were playing for a different purpose.
“It’s a game where we have to find a way to make some adjustments. I think we are fine. We’ve lost a couple of games in a row. To some people we may be showing some vulnerability, but I am telling you that these guys just have to get some confidence in knocking down some shots.”
The loss denied the Patriots a chance to claim the regular-season district title outright – Allen County-Scottsville had a chance to secure the top seed in the district tournament with home games against Monroe County on Friday and Glasgow on Monday, but dropped both games.
Now the Patriots and Scotties will draw to determine the No. 1 seed later this week.
“Does it really matter?” Bonds said. “You get a Barren County team that is continuing to get better. They play a lot of young kids, so there is no pressure on them. Or you get a Monroe County team that is going to be playing on its home floor. It doesn’t matter. They are both quality opponents and we have to be ready regardless.”
Both teams return to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Glasgow will host Metcalfe County, while Allen County-Scottsville travels to Edmonson County.
