WKU scores three first-place finishes at Gene Edmonds Open

Western Kentucky’s track and field team collected three first-place finishes along with 28 top-10 marks Saturday at the Purdue-hosted Gene Edmonds Open in West Lafayette, Ind.

WKU’s Oliver Alexandre (600-meter run) and Myesha Nott (triple jump) scored individual wins in addition to the men’s 4×400-meter relay unit. Alexandre’s 600 finish broke the WKU school record in the event.

The Hilltoppers’ top relay group of Austin Hayes, Kymari Gates, David Saruni and Martin Owusu-Antwi notched a time of 3 minutes, 14.52 seconds, grabbing the title by just three hundredths of a second over Purdue’s unit. WKU’s second and third relay units both finished in the top eight as well.

WKU’s women’s 4×400-meter relay group of Juannae Lewis, Aairiona Hayden-Ransom, Audrey Griffin and Brianna Eskridge turned in a top-eight finish. 

In the women’s running events, WKU had three runners post top-10 finishes including Hayden-Ransom, Griffin and Lewis for seventh through ninth place, respectively. Haley Webb picked up a 10th-place finish in the 3,000 meters.

On the men’s side, Alexandre earned a first-place finish in the 600 with a time of 1:19.54. Fellow Hilltopper Ka’Ven Berry finished second in 1:22.63 while David Saruni, Lincoln Warren and Maor Seged all placed in the top eight as well. In the men’s 3,000, WKU’s Dedrick Troxell and Emerson Wells earned fifth- and sixth-place finishes while Matthew Wininger and Clint Sherman finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

In the 60-meter dash, WKU’s Gates and Owusu-Antwi finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Seged added another top-10 finish in the 60-meter hurdles where he placed third in the prelims with a time of 8.48.

Nott earned the triple jump title with a 12.08-meter clear while Annastacia Forrester and Brianna Eskridge earned fourth and sixth place, respectively.

Eskridge added a 10th-place showing in the long jump while earning seventh place in the high jump. WKU’s Katie Isenbarger was third in the high jump after clearing 1.66 meters, while fellow Lady Topper Annastacia Forrester cleared the same height.

Getter Lemberg rounded out the top-10 finishes after posting a seventh-place showing in the pole vault.

WKU returns to action next weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational. The two-day outing will take place Jan. 18-19 in Nashville.
