Scotties find range to take down Warren East

GLASGOW – Tucker Kirkpatrick is starting to really feel at home in his new home.

Kirkpatrick, who transferred to Glasgow over the summer from Monroe County, has had to settle in with lots of new factors – school, teammates, style of play. The junior guard, a deadly shooter for his father’s Monroe County squad the past couple seasons, has struggled at times to find his stroke with the Scotties.

On Monday night, Kirkpatrick felt just fine. The junior guard rained down five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points as Glasgow rolled past Warren East 91-70 in a Kentucky 2A Championship second-round game.

“My percentage is sort of on the low side, but I’m just trying to build it up,” Kirkpatrick said. “My teammates gave me the ball tonight a lot and that was nice. It’s very comforting to have teammates that are willing to trust me.”

Glasgow (9-5) jumped on the Raiders early and simply never let up to secure a spot in Saturday’s Section 1 semifinals at Hopkins County Central. The Scotties will play the winner of Tuesday’s Hopkins County Central-Calloway County game in Saturday’s semifinals.

Kirkpatrick scored eight points, including a pair of treys, as the Scotties opened up a commanding 19-2 lead capped by Nik Sorrell’s 3-pointer with 3:36 left in the first quarter.

“When he’s hot, when he crosses half-court he’s a threat,” Glasgow coach James Willett said of Kirkpatrick.

Warren East (8-8) regrouped from there, narrowing the deficit to 22-10 by the end of the quarter. Then, in the second period, the Raiders briefly made things interesting. Warren East freshman Kaleb Matlock’s two made free throws whittled the margin down to seven points at 31-24, but Glasgow’s Tayshaun Bradley answered with a 3-pointer to spark an 11-2 run that pushed his team comfortably ahead again.

By halftime, the Scotties’ lead had grown to 47-29.

Warren East, losers of four straight, generated plenty of offense after that rough start. The Raiders drilled 11 3-pointers in all, with Matlock sinking three en route to a breakout 18-point night.

“The difference in the game was the start,” Warren East coach Brandon Combs said. “We burned through two timeouts and finally we got settled in and got that thing back to where it was manageable, and then they made a run on us again before the end of the first half.”

Glasgow, which has won four of its last five, was even better on offense. The Scotties outscored East in each quarter, getting double-digit scoring efforts from Kirkpatrick, Sorrell (16 points and 10 rebounds), Bowen Haney (15 points), Robert Kingery (12 points) and Bradley (12 points).

Glasgow’s 28-17 rebounding advantage helped generate some of those looks – the Scotties connected on 56.6 percent of their shots (36-of-64) while holding the Raiders to 44.1 percent (26-of-59).

“I thought defensively we kind of let up a little bit,” Willett said. “We lost some focus. That’s the trademark of a young, inexperienced team. We’re still somewhat inexperienced, but we should be old enough not to let things slip defensively. I felt like offensively we stayed engaged and OK.”

Warren East is back in action Tuesday at Barren County for a 7:30 p.m. game. Glasgow hosts District 15 rival Allen County-Scottsville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The host Lady Scotties lost starting point guard Anzley Adwell to an ankle injury in the first minute of Monday’s home game against Warren East in the Kentucky 2A Championship.

That forced Glasgow to adjust, and it took a bit of time. Warren East (7-10) bounced out to an 11-4 lead before the Lady Scotties pulled together and started finding standout forward Ashanti Gore in the paint. Gore, a junior, scored six points bridging the first and second quarters to narrow the deficit to one.

Kayla Bradley took up the scoring from there for Glasgow (12-3), delivering six straight points to push her team ahead 16-13 with 2:03 left in the half.

Then, it was freshman guard Nina McMurtrey’s turn to shine for the Lady Scotties, and she produced with a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute and a half to push her team’s advantage to 10 (23-13) by halftime.

The Lady Scotties held East to just eight points total over the second and third quarters to steadily pull away for the win and earn a spot in Saturday’s Section 1 semifinals. Glasgow will face the winner of Tuesday’s Hopkins County Central-Calloway County game at noon Saturday.

Gore had a huge night Monday, tallying a double-double with a game-high 26 points along with 11 rebounds, three blocks and three assists.

“She was tremendous,” Glasgow coach Justin Stinson said of Gore. “I had to get after her a little bit early, but she responded the right way. She wants to be good and it’s important for kids to want to be good. I thought she dominated around the basket.”

Bradley added 11 points and K.J. Hughes chipped in with 11 boards as Glasgow dominated inside for a 32-18 rebounding advantage.

Lucy Patterson had 11 points to lead Warren East, which had won five of six before Monday’s loss.

“We just didn’t shoot well tonight,” Warren East coach Orlando Hayden said. “It just wasn’t a good night for us.”

The Lady Raiders visit Barren County for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday. Glasgow will host District 15 rival Allen County-Scottsville at 6 p.m. Friday.
