LOUISVILLE – Louisville – John J. Murphy III entered eternal rest at 1:30 am on Wednesday, December 19th, 2018 at the age of 75. John was born and raised in Bowling Green and graduated from College High and obtained his Engineer’s degree in Computer Science from Capital Radio Institute.
John was preceded in death by the love of his life of over 51 years, Joyce Ann Perkins Murphy and his parents, Carlotta Elizabeth (Richards) & John J. Murphy Jr.
He is survived by three sons, John J. Murphy IV (Malina) – his best friend and primary caretaker, Justin E. Murphy (Sarah), both of Louisville and Jason Roe Murphy of Nashville. John was also survived by his 6 Grandchildren Tyler Jones, Travis Mowen, Timothy Mowen & Douglas Devine, Elliot Starling Murphy, and Sullivan Roe Murphy.
He is also survived by sisters Margaret Hilsmeier (Allen) of Delta, PA, Pam Baldock (Donald) of Bowling Green and a brother G. Michael Murphy (Mickeye) of Bowling Green. John was also survived by a sister-in-law, Judy Perkins (Bill-dec.) Bowling Green.
John started his ‘love of electronics’ at the age of 12 by becoming of one the youngest FCC Licensed Amateur (HAM) Radio operators (K4SFD) in Bowling Green and continuing that hobby for the rest of his life (WOKZT). One of his first jobs was working at the WLTV (now WBKO) transmitter and control room on top of Hadley Hill in north-western Warren County. Once he and Joyce married, they moved to Nashville where John worked for WSM TV for three years at their control facility before moving to St. Louis for his 29 year career at St. John’s Mercy Hospital, retiring there as their Director of Biomedical Electronics. After retiring back home to Bowling Green, he served as the I.T. Manager for Scott & Murphy, Inc. for ten more years.
Johnny and Joyce loved coming back home, to a home in Alvaton, and enjoying long countryside rides in Warren and surrounding counties on the weekends like they had for 55 years. They enjoyed visits from their many friends but most of all they loved their visits from their children and grandchildren.
John and Joyce both fell ill three years ago and experienced long stays in the hospital and nursing home. After over a year of various health problems, they both stabilized and moved to Louisville to the Presbyterian Homes Westminster Retirement Center where they enjoyed a very loving and caring environment, as well as had two of their sons nearby.
A visitation and memorial service will be held for John Murphy at 1:00 pm CDT Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at the First Christian Church, 1106 State Street, Bowling Green, KY 42101.
In Lieu of flowers, it was John’s hope and desire to construct a small pavilion in memory of he and Joyce at The Presbyterian Homes Westminster for his friends and future residence to enjoy the shelter from the sun and fresh air like the many hours that he and his friends spent outside. Donations may be mailed to: Joyce & John Murphy Pavilion at Westminster, P.O. Box 2520, Bowling Green, KY 42102.
