The Bowling Green girls’ basketball team kept the pressure on the Glasgow Lady Scotties, picking up a 49-27 victory in the State Farm 14th District vs. 15th District Challenge on Saturday at Bowling Green High School.

Bowling Green held Glasgow to 20 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers to win a defensive battle between the Region 4 rivals.

“We’ve been working on that a lot this season,” BG coach Calvin Head said. “We feel like we can be a really good defensive team. We are trying to overcome some scoring that left us last year due to graduation and moving. One thing we preach is really getting after it defensively. We did a fantastic job adhering to the scouting report and making sure we pay attention to details.”

Bowling Green (1-1) stifled the Glasgow offense in the opening half, holding the Lady Scotties to two field goals – none in the second period – while forcing 14 turnovers.

The Lady Purples led 13-7 after one and continued to stretch the advantage – hitting four 3-pointers in the half – to build a 28-13 cushion at the break.

Amanda Lee’s jumper – Glasgow’s first field goal in 9:33 – cut the deficit to 28-16 early in the second period, but the Lady Scotties went another five minutes between field goals to allow Bowling Green’s lead to grow to 35-19 late in the third period.

The Lady Purples continued to expand the advantage – with the largest lead of the night the final margin of victory.

“It was a struggle all night long offensively,” Glasgow coach Justin Stinson said. “I thought we came out of the gate on our heels a little bit. They punched us in the mouth a bit and we had some opportunities, but we backed away from them. I thought we bounced back, but it was such a struggle offensively we just never could get it going.”

Keyozdon Jones led the way for Bowling Green with 12 points, while Saniyah Shelton added nine points. The Lady Purples shot 29.3 percent, but their bench outscored Glasgow 17-0.

Anzley Adwell had 10 points for Glasgow (2-1), which was without Ashanti Gore – out with a medical situation. The Lady Scotties were 0-for-12 from 3–point range and 15-for-31 from the free-throw line.

“We wanted to speed up their game,” Bowling Green senior guard Taylor Ragland said. “They have certain players that can knock down outside shots, so we thought that speeding up their game would give us a good chance to beat them.”

Bowling Green will play at Allen County-Scottsville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Glasgow hosts Russell County at 6 p.m. Friday.
