Jackson sparks Barren County in win over Greenwood

Barren County junior forward Eve Jackson was a spark off the bench, much sooner than expected, in the Trojanettes’ 61-36 win over Greenwood in the State Farm 14th District vs. 15th District Challenge at Bowling Green High School on Saturday.

Pressed into action two seconds into the game when senior forward McKenzie England exited with an ankle injury, Jackson scored 14 points – one of a trio of Trojanettes in double figures as Barren County picked up its second win over a District 14 team in less than 24 hours.

“I knew as soon as she went down that one of us was going to have to go in,” Jackson said. “I didn’t know if it was going to be me or not, but (coach Piper Lindsey) put me in and I was like, ‘OK, the team has to do what we have to do to win.’ That’s what I tried to do.”

England’s injury occurred on the opening tip when she turned her right ankle on the jump ball.

With one of their seniors on the bench being attended to, the Trojanettes got off to a slow start as Greenwood built an 8-5 advantage two minutes in.

Barren County finally came to life with a 10-0 run that gave the Trojanettes a 17-11 lead early in the second period. Barren County continued to stretch the margin – with back-to-back buckets by Jackson doubling the lead to eight.

The Trojanettes stretched the advantage to 29-16 by halftime, and Jackson’s 3-pointer sparked an early second-half spurt that made the score 38-18.

Greenwood (0-2) was unable to get closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

“It was a slow start, but we overcame that,” Lindsey said. “Of course, McKenzie went down as soon as the tip and that was kind of devastating at first, but we’ve overcome all of those adversities it seems like in the past. The girls really didn’t seem to miss a beat too much.”

Jackson finished 6-for-7 from the field, adding three rebounds.

Elizabeth Bertram paced Barren County (3-0) with 20 points, while Mallory Pedigo added 12 points. The Trojanettes, who shot 61 percent in a win against South Warren on Friday, shot 56.4 percent Saturday.

“We talk about our defense and how great we are defensively, but running in transition and getting those easy baskets – we are extremely selective I think in our shots,” Lindsey said. “We want to get the best shot, not just a good shot, we want to get the best shot we can get in the offense we are running.”

Jacqueline Jackson led Greenwood (0-2) with 21 points.

“They are a good team and we knew that going in,” Greenwood coach Zach Simpson said. “I’m glad we got to see them the second game of the season. This gave us a barometer of where we are at as far as regional competition goes.”

Barren County will play at Monroe County at 6 p.m. Friday. Greenwood plays at Russell County at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The score was tied 16-all at halftime, but Allen County-Scottsville seized control by outscoring Warren Central 48-22 in the second half. The Lady Patriots shot 53.1 percent in the second half after shooting 4-for-22 in the first half.

“I challenged them (at halftime),” ACS coach Greg Dunn said. “(Sutton) took control and never looked back. She did it all, so I am really proud of that effort. I’m real proud that we were able to come and play a completely different second half, kind of dominant, and pull out the win.”

Sutton finished 12-for-19 from the field and 11-for-13 from the free-throw line. The Murray State signee added 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Taylor Carter finished with a career-high 16 points for Allen County.
