The only blemish on Greenwood’s regular-season record came courtesy of Bowling Green.

A chance at redemption in what’s likely the first of two matches in the next week between the two schools awaits the Lady Gators.

Anna Haddock pushed Greenwood to a quick start with a hat trick in the first six minutes in a 9-0 win Tuesday over South Warren in the District 14 girls’ soccer tournament.

The win sets up a Lady Gators (13-1-3) matchup with Bowling Green (15-3-2) in the district title game Thursday at Bowling Green Junior High School.

But first came handling business against South Warren (9-8). Haddock got Greenwood rolling early and the Lady Gators led 5-0 at halftime. The junior Auburn commit added her fourth goal of the game eight minutes into the second half.

Two sophomores – Amaya Salvador and Katarina Popovic – scored a pair of Greenwood’s second-half goals.

Greenwood controlled possession with a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal.

“It was really important for us to be very businesslike about it,” Greenwood coach Zach Salchli said. “The first 10 minutes we wanted to come out and really set the tone and I couldn’t ask for a better start. We were able to rotate some girls and get a lot of good looks. We called (Salvador and Popovic) up a week ago, so it was cool for them to step up and get that moment on the big stage. Good to see everyone step up contributing.”

South Warren’s season ended with sophomores stepping into a defense depleted early in the year with the loss of goalkeeper Teresa Bohnlein. Her early leg injury forced a rotation of defenders to step up in net.

Sophomore Amy Thomas settled in as goalkeeper for South Warren, which won five of its last six games before the district tournament.

“We knew it was going to be a challenge,” South Warren coach Andrew Hutto said. “Losing Teresa five games into the season took away that safety net for us. We threw a young group into the fire and there were times even in this game where we held out for a few minutes but with the talent in our district, it just wasn’t enough. They played remarkable in a tough situation.”

The Lady Purples punched their ticket to the district title game by routing Warren Central 6-0.

Bowling Green defeated Greenwood in a regular-season match 3-1 on Sept. 13. It marked the only loss for Greenwood, which is ranked third in the latest Maher rankings. Bowling Green comes in at No. 10 in the Maher rankings.

“It’s a building game,” Greenwood senior Liz Carter said. “It’s something not taken as importantly because you go to region. It’s used for building and we take it as it is to work kinks out and stuff.”

Bowling Green 6, Warren Central 0

Caroline Buchanan scored a hat trick and the Lady Purples rolled to a 6-0 victory over Warren Central to set up a match with Greenwood in the District 14 title game.

Buchanan scored within the first 10 minutes before a late surge in the half put Bowling Green up 4-0 at the break.

Sophomore Whitaker Buchanan scored her second goal of the night right after halftime for her 38th goal of the season. Caroline Buchanan scored her third goal off an assist from Whitaker with 23:54 left in the match.

“The first game of the district is the most important because you have to win to move on,” Bowling Green coach Lisa Correa said. “It feels good to get the win and get that behind us. I thought the team came out really strong. We executed very well tonight, knocked the ball around and finished chances. We created a lot of chances and I’m just happy with the way we moved the ball around tonight.”

Warren Central’s best chance at a goal came on Adelisa Becirovic’s penalty kick with 10 minutes left in the first half, but her shot deflected off the left post, and Whitaker Buchanan’s goal three minutes later put Bowling Green up 4-0.

The Lady Purples have outscored Warren Central 31-0 in last four meetings dating back to 2015. The Lady Dragons ended the season at 16-4 with their only losses coming against district opponents Bowling Green, Greenwood and a double-overtime loss to South Warren.

The senior Becirovic ended her season with 39 goals and 113 scores over her Lady Dragons career for a Warren Central school record.{&end}
