Tyree leads Lady Tops on first day of Kentucky tournament

Western Kentucky junior Bailey Tyree fired a 1-under 71 on Friday in the first round of Kentucky’s Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, tying her for fifth individually with two days to go in the tournament.
The Lady Toppers are tied for fourth as a team after carding a 296 total at the par-72, 6,221-yard Big Blue Course at UK’s University Club in Lexington.
Kentucky leads the standings with a 280 on its home course. Only five shots separate WKU from second-place Notre Dame at 291.
Behind Tyree, fellow WKU junior Abigail Smee is tied for 16th with a 1-over 73, while freshman Lizzie Loy is tied for 27th with a 3-over 75.
Junior Mary Joiner and freshman Caroline Waldrop each turned in 77s on the opening day. Sophomores Caroline Cavin and Megan Clarke shot an 80 and 81, respectively, while participating as individuals.
The second round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. CDT Saturday, with the final round to follow Sunday.
