Lady Toppers wrap up play in Purdue tournament

Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team finished play Sunday at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.

Three Lady Toppers competed in both the doubles and singles brackets.

Freshman Judit Gonzalez Agud led the Lady Toppers in wins for the second consecutive tournament, earning two in her singles bracket. She defeated opponents from Lipscomb and Northern Illinois, taking a second opponent from Lipscomb to a third set.

Austria native and junior Lisa Friess notched a win over an opponent from Xavier 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. Friess fell to two different Ball State representatives in the second and final rounds of competition.

Also picking up a win was WKU sophomore Laura Bernardos. In the first round, Bernardos faced a representative from host team Purdue, defeating her opponent 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the second and final round in the Black Singles bracket, Bernardos fell to players from Lipscomb and Purdue.

Bernardos and Friess teamed up for doubles action and competed in four matches in the Black Doubles bracket. The pair picked up a win over a duo from NIU in the final round of action, winning 8-4.

WKU will return to action in November when the Lady Toppers compete in their final fall tournament of the season at Chattanooga, Tenn.
