GLASGOW – It was a one-two punch approach that carried Greenwood to a 28-7 victory over Barren County on Friday night.

The Gators were led by a running back tandem of Javier Boyd and Reed Slone that combined for nearly 300 yards. Boyd led the way with 207 yards, and Slone followed up behind him with 79 yards and a touchdown.

“Well, we finally got him going,” Greenwood coach William Howard said of Boyd. “He had a great night tonight for us … I think we kind of kept them off guard with Reed Slone and Mason (Wilson) a little bit and then Javier up the middle, so you know we just did a good job up front as far as moving them around and trapping them a little bit.”

Greenwood started the scoring on a drive that was heavily dictated by Boyd and Slone. The two combined for 80 yards on Greenwood’s first series, which ended with Gators quarterback John Morrison finding Wilson on a 6-yard touchdown pass.

Slone, back in good health after dealing with a hamstring injury leading up to this game, set Greenwood up for another scoring drive while on defense by picking off a pass from Barren County quarterback Zach Johnson. Greenwood’s Zach Langevin punched in a touchdown from 5 yards out following the interception to give Greenwood a 14-0 lead.

Greenwood put together a third TD drive thanks in big part to a 30-yard carry from Boyd on the first play. He totaled 42 yards on the drive before Wilson scored on a 6-yard carry to put Greenwood up 21-0.

“I think we had them,” Boyd said. “Coach was calling the right plays, he knew what to do, watching film a lot, so it helped out a lot. Offensive line did what they had to do, they made holes and I ran through them.”

The Trojans finally answered on the ensuing drive by going 80 yards to cut the deficit to 14. The highlight of the drive was a 26-yard touchdown run by Jamarcus Miley to make the score 21-7.

Greenwood let its one-two punch go to work on a putaway drive that gave the Gators their definitive 21-point lead. It was either Boyd or Slone carrying the ball on all eight plays of the drive, as the two went 66 yards and capped it off with a Slone touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

“They’re good players,” Barren County coach Jackson Arnett said of Slone and Boyd. “They run hard, and we were just missing tackles, we missed a bunch of tackles.”

Barren County was plagued by turnovers throughout, as the Trojans lost two fumbles and threw an interception in the losing effort.

Greenwood (2-3) will be on the road again next week to play Bowling Green. Barren County (1-4) will hit the road to take on Ballard Memorial.
