After registering its best round in more than 10 years, Western Kentucky’s golf team matched the feat just five days later.

Three Hilltoppers broke 70 on Friday as WKU fired a 7-under 277 in the opening round of the Louisville Cardinals Challenge.

WKU is tied for fourth in a 16-team field that features six programs rated in the top 50 of last season’s final Golfstat rankings.

The second round is scheduled Saturday at the par-71, 7,101-yard University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville.

The Hilltoppers’ 277 comes on the heels of an 11-under 277 to conclude play last weekend in Indiana’s Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational. Before that effort, WKU had not shot 277 or better since spring 2008.

True freshman Dominic Brettkelly led the squad Friday with a 4-under 67 in his second college tournament.

Brettkelly is tied for 11th individually following a round that included seven birdies.

Redshirt junior Linus Lo was one stroke back in a tie for 13th with a 3-under 68. Lo registered four birdies and an eagle.

Redshirt senior Billy Tom Sargent is tied for 16th with a 2-under 69, and sophomore Chase Landrum – competing as an individual – shot a 1-under 70 to sit in a tie for 32nd.

Redshirt freshman Dawson McDaniel also counted toward WKU’s team tally with a 2-over 73.

Duke, which finished last season ranked No. 17 in the country, leads the team standings after carding a 257 team total.
