City schools to consider property tax rate

The Bowling Green Independent School District Board of Education is considering a property tax rate of 82.8 cents on real and personal property, the same rate it set last year when it approved an increase to fund Bowling Green High School renovations.

A public hearing will take place at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the district’s central office at 1211 Center St.

Last year, the board approved an increase of 5.4 cents to help fund a multiphase overhaul of the district’s aging high school. Superintendent Gary Fields said the board is conscious of that increase and doesn’t want to raise taxes again this year.

“We work really hard to maximize the money that the public entrusts with us to create great opportunities for kids in our school district,” Fields said, adding the board wants to work with the money it has.

Fields said the nickel tax increase approved last year can only go toward construction projects, as mandated by state law.

“That 5.4 cents will go directly to the bond payment,” for the high school, Fields said.

The board will take a vote on the tax rate on the same night as the hearing, he said.

The property tax rate is applied to every $100 of assessed property value. The owner of a $200,000 home, for example, would pay $1,656 under the rate of 82.8 cents.

According to a notice of the hearing published in the Daily News, “The proposed general fund tax rate for fiscal year 2018-19 of 82.8 cents on real property and 82.8 cents on personal property is expected to produce $12,560,038.06.”
