The Bowling Green Hot Rods’ Craig Albernaz was named the Midwest League’s Manager of the Year and four Hot Rods landed on the postseason all-star team, the league announced Friday.
Bowling Green second baseman Vidal Brujan, outfielder Moises Gomez, catcher Ronaldo Hernandez and right-handed pitcher Tommy Romero were all named to the all-star team.
The four Hot Rods represented are the most in the league, and were voted on by the managers within the Midwest League. It is the most number of Hot Rods ever named to a Midwest League Post-Season All-Star team, besting the three named in 2012 and 2013. Albernaz is the first Hot Rods manager to win the Manager of the Year award.
Albernaz has managed the Hot Rods to the best record in the Midwest League entering play Friday. His team has set the franchise record for longest winning streak twice this season – an 11-game run and a 13-game run. The Hot Rods won the Eastern Division in the first half by 4 1/2 games. The Hot Rods entered play Friday up one game over Lansing in the second-half standings and 5 1/2 games overall.
Brujan, a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star, was recently called up to High-A Charlotte. He finished his time in Bowling Green with a .313 batting average. In 95 games, he had 118 hits and 41 RBIs. He also had 48 walks and was among the league leaders with 43 stolen bases.
Gomez, a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star, enters play Friday with a .277 average. His 47 extra-base hits lead the team. He has 67 RBIs and 13 home runs, second most on the team in each category.
Hernandez, a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star and Home Run Derby champion, has played 97 games this season and leads the team with 18 home runs and 73 RBIs.
Romero, a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star, joined the Hot Rods at the end of May and is 6-1 with a 3.36 ERA since joining the club. The Hot Rods are 12-1 in games in which he has started, and he currently leads the team with a 3.01 ERA, 113 2/3 innings pitched and 122 strikeouts.
The Hot Rods are headed back to the postseason, and will take on the Lansing Lugnuts in the first round, beginning Sept. 6 at Bowling Green Ballpark{&end}
