It was a team effort for the Bowling Green girls’ soccer team in Tuesday’s season-opening 10-0 win over Warren East at Bowling Green Junior High School.
Seven players scored at least a goal, with a trio of players scoring twice to help Bowling Green cruise to the opening-night victory.
“In soccer you are as strong as your weakest link,” BG coach Lisa Correa said.
“Everybody is pulling for each other and playing for each other. You can see on the field that they have that drive to work hard for each other. We are just hoping to build on this.”
Riley Thompson started the scoring for Bowling Green (1-0 overall, 1-0 District 14) in the sixth minute, scoring off a pass from Caroline Buchanan.
Buchanan added a goal six minutes later to extend the lead to 2-0.
The lead grew to 3-0 on Emma Wilgruber’s first goal in the 19th minute. Buchanan added a second goal in the 26th minute, with Whitaker Buchanan scoring two minutes later.
The Lady Purples added three more goals before halftime – including goals from Catherine Walker, Wilgruber and Ella Farley to make it 9-0.
“It’s great to have all of us come out and have all of us playing together and connecting,” Caroline Buchanan said. “It’s a great way to start the season.”
It only took two minutes into the second half to add the final goal, with Caroline Buchanan’s second assist coming on a goal by Katie Jo Moore to make it 10-0 and end the game with the KHSAA mandated 10-goal mercy rule.
“It’s definitely a good way to get things started off, to get the ball rolling,” Wilgruber said. “It’s always important to have multiple people to get it into the back of the net. We definitely have multiple people who are comfortable shooting and are comfortable getting up there in shooting range.”
Bowling Green outshot Warren East 27-0 with a 18-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Natlie Mills, Caroline Miller and Leah Hughes combined on the shutout.
“It was nice to get that contribution from the team,” Correa said. “The defense did well. It took a little while in the beginning to get started, but they started finding their combinations and getting the ball out wide and opening it up a little bit.”
Bowling Green returns to action at Henderson County at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Warren East is back in action Friday against Hart County in the Lady Dragons Lair Classic at Warren Central.
