Home runs power Hot Rods past Captains

The Bowling Green Hot Rods used the long ball Thursday to beat the Lake County Captains 8-1 at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.

Bowling Green’s Jim Haley and Devin Davis each hit home runs, while Ronaldo Hernandez hit two for the third time this season.

The Hot Rods got started in the first inning. Vidal Brujan led off with a bunt single, and Haley brought him in three pitches later on a long blast to the bleachers in left field. Two batters later, Hernandez followed with his first home run of the evening to make it 3-0.

Bowling Green has scored 10 total runs in the first inning in the first two games of this series.

Lake County responded with a run in the bottom of the third.

The Hot Rods blew the game open with four runs in the fifth, all with two outs. Brujan doubled to right field, and Haley followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Carl Chester then singled to right field, bringing in two runs. Hernandez followed with his second home run of the night, making it 7-1.

Davis added a solo home run in the eighth.

Resly Linares earned the win, improving to 4-3 on the season. He threw six innings, allowing seven hits and one run. He walked one and struck out eight. Simon Rosenblum-Larson, in his first Hot Rods appearance, earned the save. He threw the final three innings, allowing a hit and a walk, striking out five.

The Hot Rods will look for a sweep Friday as they start right-hander Tobias Myers (9-5, 4.04). The Captains will counter with lefty Francisco Perez (8-7, 3.85). First pitch from Classic Park is set for 6 p.m. CDT.
