As if Bowling Green eighth-grader Charlie Reber’s 25-foot putt wasn’t impressive enough, its bigger impact on the Purples’ golf team brought on a few more cheers than usual.
Bowling Green set a goal Tuesday night to shoot the lowest score by any Purples team in more than a decade. Two days later, Reber’s putt made it happen.
It gave Bowling Green a team score of 297 to win the South Warren Golf Invitational on Thursday at CrossWinds Golf Course, the team’s second win in four tournaments this season.
“If he made it, we win,” BGHS coach Adam Whitt said. “There’s a bit extra cheer than you normally get after a 25-foot putt.”
Bowling Green edged Daviess County by one stroke for its second straight team title in the annual event at CrossWinds, the team’s primary practice course.
Collier Curd won a scorecard playoff to finish runner-up with a 5-under 67. Tristen Carter shot even-par 72, Clark McDougal fired a 70 and Reber’s long putt gave him an 80 to put Bowling Green under 300 for the first time in more than a decade.
“We talked about trying to break 300 and we did it two days after that,” Carter said, recalling a team meeting Tuesday in Lexington before playing in the Kentucky Cup. “It feels great.”
The 297 caps a three-day stretch of play for the Purples. They placed sixth in the Gator Invitational on Tuesday with a 317, then fired a season-low 308 to finish 10th in Lexington on Wednesday.
Two scores at par or lower helped Bowling Green beat that season-low score by 11 strokes.
“The cool thing about the two wins is they’re done in two different ways,” Whitt said. “We’ve got a bona fide horse at the top in Collier and he carries us a lot, but with Clark playing well and Tristen playing well today, we’re able to do it in different ways, and that’s what I’m more excited about.
“To come out literally in the next tournament and (shoot under 300) was pretty cool. Hope we keep the momentum going forward.”
South Warren senior CM Mixon won the individual boys’ title with a 6-under 66 for his third win of the year. Curd’s 67 put him at runner-up after a scorecard playoff.
Mixon sank a birdie putt on No. 18 followed with an emphatic fist pump to celebrate a long-sought score. Mixon won two tournaments in Owensboro last week with rounds of 67 and 68.
“I just wanted to put myself in position and I executed,” Mixon said. “Today I broke a big barrier. I’ve always been around that 5-under mark and today I was able to shoot six. To get there and be there feels great. I’m going to take it from this even deeper because that’s the next step for me. … I just showed a bit more emotion because it felt good to finally break that barrier I’ve been chasing this whole year.”
Wheeler leads Greenwood to season-best
The shoulder pain wasn’t enough to hold back Allison Wheeler, who fired a 1-under 70 to win the South Warren Golf Invitational girls’ individual title by one stroke.
Just released to play in July after a shoulder surgery in March to repair a torn labrum, Wheeler fought through pain to shoot a season-low.
“Hitting the ball is what saved me because I couldn’t putt to save my life except for the 18th hole,” Wheeler said. “I made that putt, otherwise I’d be in a playoff with three other girls, so thank God for that one.”
Wheeler edged South Warren’s Faith Martin and Marshall County’s Hallie Riley and Megan Hertter, who each shot 71, par for the course in the girls’ tournament.
Marshall County won the team title with a 300.
Wheeler’s 70 helped Greenwood post its best score of the year with a 323, besting the previous score in the Gator Invitational on Tuesday by 30 strokes.
“It’s big for (Wheeler’s) confidence coming back from the injury,” Greenwood coach Kevin Clark said. “Didn’t get in trouble, just kept hitting greens and giving herself a lot of easy pars. This is big for her and good for the team, too. That’s by far the best team score we’ve had.”
South Warren finished runner-up by topping its previous all-time low team score by 14 strokes with a 314. McKenna Stahl shot 6-over 77 while Lauren Holeman and Abbie Cline each shot 83.
