Cover shoots course record to lead Southern Amateur

Published 10:11 pm Thursday, July 19, 2018

Western Kentucky redshirt senior Billy Tom Sargent, a Georgetown native, putts on the 18th hole Wednesday during the 112th Southern Amateur Championship at The Club at Olde Stone. Sargent carded a 4-under par 68 to tie for ninth after the first round.

The back nine at The Club at Olde Stone is where golfers of the Southern Amateur Championship are learning to cash in on good shots.

Patrick Cover certainly took advantage of it unlike any ever at Olde Stone.

“I felt really comfortable and figured out the back is where you have to make your money,” Cover said. “You have to go out and make a lot of birdies here if you want to contend here.”

Cover turned in a course-record 63 in the second round of the Southern Am on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead on the field. The Cornelius, N.C., native and recent UNC-Wilmington graduate shot 28 on his first nine holes – starting at No. 10 – with six birdies and an eagle.

His 63 is a course record by one stroke previously held by former U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox in the NCAA Division I Regional in 2012.

Cover birdied on two of his first four holes, then caught fire with a driver that set up a long putt for eagle on the par-4 No. 14. He sank a 35- to 40-foot putt before turning in four straight birdies to end the back nine.

“You can be a little more aggressive, but ultimately if you’re hitting good shots, you’re going to be rewarded on the back a little more than you’ll be rewarded on the front,” Cover said. “It’s just a little more demanding on the front than the back.”

Cover leads the tournament at -12 with a two-stroke lead over Taylor Bibbs (San Diego, Calif.). Wednesday’s co-leader Hunter Richardson is fourth at 9-under after shooting 2-under in the second round.

Seven participants from Kentucky made the cut to the low 66 scores and ties. Seventy-six players with a score of 1-over par or lower made the cut.

Owensboro native John Augenstein leads that Kentucky group after shooting 6-under on Thursday to hold at 7-under and a tie for seventh. Union native Austin Squires followed up a strong day one performance by carding a 2-under to join that 7-under group.

Bowling Green’s Justin Perry held even Thursday and sits at 1-under and tied for 42nd. Perry, 32, wasn’t in the tournament until he medaled in the on-site qualifier on Monday.

“I played well on Monday and I thought let’s carry the momentum forward and I kept it going, been hitting it well and I’m close to shooting 3- or 4-under each day,” Perry said. “It’s just neat to get back in tournament golf.

“I don’t travel around much and play amateur golf anymore. This is the biggest event I’ve played in a while, so I’m proud of myself and hung in there and we’ll see what we can do for the next couple of days.”

Augenstein surged into the top 10 after settling down from what he called “a hectic couple of days.” The 2014 KHSAA individual state champion and 2015 Kentucky Mr. Golf won the Players Amateur in South Carolina on Sunday, played in a U.S. Amateur qualifier in Cincinnati on Monday, then played the first round at Olde Stone without a caddy.

Much-needed rest and recovery that night helped Augenstein – whose 32nd ranking in the World Amateur Golf Rankings automatically qualifies him for the U.S. Amateur – refresh for the second round.

“I definitely left some shots out there and did a couple of things that if I was in a little better frame of mind, I wouldn’t have done,” Augenstein said. “Coming out here today, I felt a little more refreshed, got some good rest last night and my game felt good. You can get the back nine and really attack it. You’ve got a lot of birdie chances if you’re in position and that’s just what I didn’t do yesterday. I didn’t get myself in position to make birdies and today I did.”
