- Then-Western Kentucky assistant softball coach Matt Wilhite conducts drills at practice Feb. 14, 2017, at the WKU Softball Complex. Wilhite has been named Franklin-Simpson’s district athletic director.
After two seasons as an assistant with the Western Kentucky softball team, Matt Wilhite is returning to his alma mater as the district athletic director.
Wilhite taught and coached softball at Franklin-Simpson from 2012-16 before joining Amy Tudor’s staff at WKU the past two years.
Family influences and the opportunity to get back home were enough to draw Wilhite back to Franklin-Simpson. Joey Kilburn resigned from the position earlier this summer.
“I consider both those places home to me,” Wilhite said. “It’s where I grew up and went to school, where my brother and sister went to school and I have so many fond memories there.
“Even when I was playing pro ball, I’d come back home to Franklin and go back to Western and play with some of those guys. Both these places mean a lot to me. Honestly, I thought it was a good chance for me.”
Wilhite was an All-American pitcher for WKU who spent eight years in professional baseball.
He went back to Franklin-Simpson in 2012 as the head softball coach, winning four straight District 13 championships and was named the Region 4 Coach of the Year in 2014.

Bart Weaver has been hired as Edmonson County High School girls’ basketball coach, the school announced Tuesday.
Weaver was an assistant for the boys’ basketball team and recently retired as a teacher from ECHS after 30 years.
Weaver takes over a program coming off its best season in school history. Kevin Jackson, who stepped down at the end of the season, coached Edmonson County to a 29-5 record with a District 12 championship. The Lady Cats graduated five seniors that made up 77 percent of the team’s scoring last season.
