Bowling Green residents will celebrate the abolition of slavery in the U.S. with a Juneteenth celebration this weekend at Roland Bland Park.

Juneteenth celebrates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the end of slavery in Texas and more broadly the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the South. The announcement followed Congress’ passage of the 13th Amendment in January 1865.

The Bowling Green event will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and last throughout the day with a celebration of African-American culture, a basketball tournament, fitness challenge, music, food and more.
