Logan County offense shines to snap Spartans’ win streak

South Warren’s winning streak came to a screeching halt with a tamed offense against Logan County. It was instead the Cougars swinging with confidence Tuesday night, using 13 hits, including a pair of home runs from Bradley Taylor, to secure a 9-4 win at South Warren High School.

Taylor came a double away from the cycle with his two-run shot over the left field fence giving Logan County (21-8) a three-run lead in the fourth inning and his second two-run bomb pushing the lead to four runs in the seventh.

The senior third baseman and the Cougars’ leadoff hitter finished the game 4-5 from the plate with four RBI and four runs scored.

“I like when I start off like that,” Taylor said. “Feel like everyone on the team can hit like it.”

South Warren mustered just three hits through five innings, but doubled that production in the sixth to produce two runs. The Spartans (21-10) allowed two runs to score on an error and a wild pitch on senior night to make a major difference in snapping their 11-game winning streak.

The team that’s grown accustomed to come-from-behind victories had too little too late against Logan County.

“We competed well for the most part except getting beat by some fastballs you don’t normally get beat by,” South Warren coach Chris Gage said. “You just give credit to Logan County.”

Dylan Penick earned the win for Logan County in his first start while rehabbing from a knee injury suffered during football season. The righty had only pitched in relief before Tuesday, so Cougars’ coach Ethan Meguiar said he was “tickled to death” when the junior tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs off five hits with eight strikeouts.

Pennick singled in the fifth as part of the Cougars’ big night offensively. Austin Rayno, Koby Wall and Braxton Meguiar each had two hits and Logan County still left 10 runners on base.

“I was really tickled that our guys continued to battle and put us in situations to score,” Meguiar said. “South Warren, very good offensive team that can come back on you and score some runs. Got a lot of two-out hits tonight.”

Logan County swung big from the beginning with Taylor leading off on a single, then scoring on Wall’s two-out triple. Wall crossed home on Rayno’s double to lead 2-0.

South Warren cut into the lead twice with Jacob Lacey’s two-out home run to right field bringing the Spartans within 2-1 and a score on a wild pitch in the third inning bringing them within 3-2.

Taylor’s two-run bomb stretched the lead to three runs and a sacrifice fly in the sixth made it a 6-2 lead.

The Spartans fought back for a third time with Lacey’s two-run double cutting the deficit to 6-4, but Taylor sent his second homer over left-center field to make it 8-4.

Kaleb Justice put the nail in the coffin with a bomb over center field with two outs.

Senior Mason Biggs earned the start for the Spartans and went three innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Bryson Yates and Cade Vernon each allowed three earned runs in relief work.

“To be honest, I was surprised we made as many mistakes as we did pitching and gave them some things,” Gage said. “We had a game plan that went out the window with our pitching and we didn’t execute the way we wanted to execute. They make you pay for it and that’s the sign of a good team.”

Lacey led the Spartans with two hits and three RBIs.

Each team returns to action Thursday with Logan County hosting Muhlenberg County and South Warren traveling to Christian County.
