GLASGOW – Just start over.

Years of losing and inconsistency has caught up with Barren County football, and its young head coach simply wants to start over.

Jackson Arnett thought about dropping the Trojans out of district play when he was hired almost a year ago. The idea was only mentioned in the past, but it’ll finally be a reality this fall.

Barren County will drop out of Class 5A, District 2 this upcoming season to play an independent 10-game schedule and not participate in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association postseason.

Playing 10 games with no pressure in a new football stadium this fall, Arnett believes, is what can get Barren County back to being competitive.

“We’re a 5A school, but we really have 2A numbers football-wise,” Arnett said. “To be honest, it’s a pressure-free year. We want to win as many games as we can and have as much fun as we can and start this new era off right. That’s really it.”

The only thing that changes on Barren County’s schedule this fall is the removal of Bowling Green and South Warren. Barren County wanted to keep former district opponent Grayson County on the schedule, and Arnett said they couldn’t get out of their game with Greenwood.

Taking Bowling Green’s spot on the Trojans’ schedule is Clinton County, while Ballard Memorial takes the place of South Warren.

Both Bowling Green and South Warren have yet to find a 10th game for 2018 and could possibly play nine-game schedules.

“I think what we’ve got coming, we’ll be competitive and be able to do some things,” Arnett said. “It’s not a perfect scenario, but it’s a good situation for us. I love the new alignment and I was glad when I saw it.”

With the KHSAA Board of Control on Wednesday approving a new football alignment for 2019-22, Barren County will jump to 6A, District 2 with Central Hardin, North Hardin and Meade County.

Taking the Trojans’ place in 5A, District 2 is Christian County joining Bowling Green, South Warren and Greenwood.

Arnett said he already sees signs of belief in Barren County football in just the one year he’s been on the job. Glasgow has been the traditional football power in the area while the Trojans haven’t won more than four games in a season since 2011. They won a single game in 2016 and 2017.

“I think the stadium has helped and a new face has helped,” Arnett, 26, said. “Me being closer to their age helps. A lot of it is familiarity. There’s been a lot of turnover here.

“I love it here. I love my job and getting a chance to be around all these guys and build something and you do it together.”

Arnett also added that a full spring with the program makes a difference, which he didn’t have last year when hired in May.

For the team’s spring game, Arnett said “hundreds of people” showed up and lined the practice field last Thursday.

“The proof is right there,” Arnett said. “Things are getting better. The atmosphere was good and I said (to the team), ‘Wait ‘til this carries over on a Friday night and it can be really fun.’

“I see a lot of positive momentum and excitement.”
